Faith in Everyone to Shine Brightly
At St Mary's we all - children and adults alike - consider the very best behaviour to be normal and expected: we have 'faith in everyone to shine brightly'. We show this in so many ways: caring for each other, being helpful, sympathising with others, holding doors for each other, solving our friendship problems quickly, being polite, not tolerating unkindness and valuing our own and others' learning. When someone is not 'shining brightly' with their behaviour, we work quickly to find out why, give the right support, use restorative approaches and then make amends, forgive and move on.
Our policy has been developed by St Mary’s staff, based on tried, tested and proven effective practice. We have been influenced by the work of behaviour expert Paul Dix, in his book, ‘When the Adults Change, Everything Changes: Seismic Shifts in School Behaviour’.

Restorative Justice
To support our shining brightly behaviour policy and the anti-bullying policy, we aim to use this type of questioning (below) to help resolve issues when they occur. The colour changes represent how this restorative questioning can move a child/ren through the stages of emotional reaction (red) through to restorative calm (green). Involving other children, including perpetrators, targets, and impartial others (e.g. by-standers) can enable those involved in bullying/mis-treatment an opportunity to understand how their target felt.
